Visual representation of the climate change in online news

The thesis focuses on journalistic photography in news articles about climate change. In the theoretical part it anchors concepts such as the effects of climate change and its impact on society, explains the workings of stereotypes and solution journalism. It also focuses on fixing the definition of environmental photography and describes the workings of newsrooms, gatekeeping and agenda setting. It will then use a form of mixed quantitative and qualitative research to answer the research question of what photographs are selected for articles about climate change around the world. In the quantitative part, it will use content analysis to map three hundred photographs from three Czech media outlets, A2larm.cz, Novinky.cz and Seznazpravy.cz. The thesis will explore the hypotheses that visually impressive photography will have more space regardless of the weight of the topic, and that stereotypical methods of sampling will predominate when using illustrative images. The qualitative part will answer the research question through three semi-structured interviews and then form a conclusion in the form of an grounded theory. Tato diplomová práce, ​Byla, nebyla jedna firma, a ta se jmenovala Patagonie​, se zabývá případovou studií outdorové značky Patagonia a jejích aktivistických transmediálních obsahových projektů, s důrazem na nejaktuálnější kampaň značky: ​Zachraňte Bears Ears​. Park Bears Ears je obdobou české chráněné krajinné oblasti, jejíž status ale současný americký prezident Donald Trump nedávno neautorizovaně sebral. Zatímco se firma zabývá výrobou a prodejem kvalitního outdoorového oblečení, tak se Patagonie ve stejnou dobu také aktivně angažuje do veřejného dění. Firma informuje své zákazníky zejména o stavu životního prostředí prostřednictvím svćyh multimediálních poutavých příběhů nesoucí prvky žurnalistiky. Patagonie usiluje o podněcování veřejnosti a ostatních firem zapojovat se do občanské společnosti, změnit spotřební chování nejen zákazníků, ale i výrobců, s konec̆ným cílem udržitelné ochrany této křehké planety, kterou my všichni obýváme. Patagonie potvrzuje své altruistické odhodlání prostřednictvím svého oficiálního firemního hesla: "Jsme v businessu, abychom zachránili planetu."
Media review of environmental activism during the D8 motorway building

Master thesis Media review of environmental activism during the D8 motorway building focuses on media review of longlasting dispute about building the D8 motorway. Using content analysis, it aims to describe how the activists are presented and reviewed by media. Theoretical part focuses on theory of mediation, media effects, news values and construction of reality. Then it concerns with environmental journalism as a branch of journalism practice. Historical overview of D8 construction is also mentioned. The practical part implements the main research - content analysis of the 10 years long period, with regard to 2003 - 2005 and 2011 - 2013 periods. The research has shown that media coverage was really strong during these periods. Media seek for objectivity but nevertheless, the final review is barely negative.
